How Boys Join the Cincinnati Boychoir

older boy helping younger boy with bowtieThree evenings a year, we host a Boychoir Discovery Night for interested boys and their parents or guardians. The directors and staff of the Boychoir talk about their goals for singers, how they work towards those goals, and the nitty-gritty details of rehearsals, performances, uniforms, and more. Basically, we try to share what parents and guardians want to know about what it’s like when their boys sing in the Boychoir.

Lest you think your boy will be bored to tears listening to all of these details, never fear. Interested boys get the chance to sing with our choirs during a typical rehearsal. They will experience how incredible it is to sing in a group of boys who want to be there and to sing well together.

We will also hear each boy sing separately in small groups. This is the audition, but it is nothing to be worried about. We keep it short and simple, and boys do not need to prepare anything ahead of time. We ask each boy to listen to a few notes and sing them and then sing a familiar song such as Happy Birthday.

We host Discovery Nights in September, January, and May. Discovery Nights are open to any boy entering the second through twelfth grade.

If you can’t make it to a Discovery Night and you have a boy who would like to be considered, please see one of the directors after a concert or call our office. We always appreciate recommendations from the boy’s school music teacher. (Sample teacher recommendation letter)

We will notify you of your boy’s acceptance and placement via email within one week of the Discovery Night.

The Boychoir groups boys into choirs by level. As you’ll see below, the first level does not require an audition. Boys advance through the various choirs based on a TABS assessment (theory, attendance, behavior, singing). Our top level, the Ambassadors, is our elite traveling ensemble. Boys interested in the Ambassadors may try out after spending at least one season in a lower-level choir.

Level 1 – Passport to Boychoir
These are six-week sessions for boys in grades 1-3 who don’t want the pressure of an audition or mainstage performance. More information here.

Level 2 – Apprentices
Grades 3-5, Monday nights 6:00 – 7:30 pm

Level 3 (treble) – JourneyMen
