The 26 Boychoir members will give a sendoff performance at Winton Woods Primary, North, 73 Junefield Ave in Greenhills, at 10am on March 21 before departing for L.A. (Media are welcome and encouraged to attend.)

While in L.A., the boys will give five performances, help teach a choir class at University of Southern California and conduct a workshop for male members of the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus. The boys will collaborate with professional and amateur choirs in the L.A. area and appear with Horizon Music Group, All-American Boys Chorus, Orange County High School of the Arts and University of Alabama Huntsville Chamber Choir.

“We are privileged to receive this invitation to perform and help conduct classes and workshops with such prestigious choral groups,” said Chris Eanes, artistic director for Cincinnati Boychoir. “This opportunity will allow us to showcase our talent, learn from our colleagues and promote Cincinnati and the World Choir Games.” The boys will also visit Santa Monica Pier, Warner Bros. Studio, California Science Center and Disneyland.

The Cincinnati Boychoir includes 120 boys in grades three to eight, representing about 40 local schools. Members audition for the choir by recommendation of school music teachers from throughout the region. The choir performs about 40 concerts per year at schools, churches, community centers and other venues.

Members of the Boychoir will represent Cincinnati and compete in two categories in the World Choir Games, coming to Cincinnati in July 2012. It is one of the few boys’ choirs still in existence in the state of Ohio. The Ohio Boychoir disbanded in 2009 because of financial struggles and declining membership.

The Cincinnati Boychoir is funded through member tuition and donations. Financial aid is available for eligible students.

The Cincinnati Boychoir is recognized internationally as one of America’s finest boy choirs. The choir has performed with the Cincinnati Opera, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and May Festival Chorus, the Metropolitan Festival Choir and Orchestra of Detroit, the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and in March 2011 made its first appearance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

The choir has also performed with the world-famous Vienna Boys’ Choir and six Cincinnati Boychoir members have gone on to join the Vienna Boys’ Choir.

###

The Cincinnati Boychoir provides vocal training and ensemble experience in the traditional art of boychoir singing. Founded in 1965, the Boychoir seeks to enhance the social, emotional and musical development of young boys through dedication, self-discipline and respect. By striving for artistic excellence and learning a diverse repertory of choral literature, the boys are prepared for a lifelong love of music and ensemble singing.

Boys from first through eighth grade from all over the Cincinnati area will spend the morning rehearsing music, learning music theory, and getting to know each other with fun music-based games and activities.

At 1:00pm the Festival Choir, in addition to the Cincinnati Boychoir Concert Choir & Training Choirs, will present a short concert free of charge and open to the public.

The Cincinnati Boychoir’s initiative to bring music education to boys throughout Cincinnati, entitled Cincinnati Sings!, includes weekly free-of-charge outreach choir programs at Evanston Academy and Bond Hill Academy; thirty boys from these programs will be participating in the All-City Boychoir Festival, sponsored by Families Forward. The 100 boys already enrolled in the Boychoir will play host to the additional 70 boys that have registered to participate. In all, more than 50 schools will be represented at the All-City Boychoir Festival.

Additionally, a concurrent workshop entitled “Music In Motion” for local music teachers will be presented by KellyAnn Nelson, the Cincinnati Boychoir’s Director of Education & Outreach; teachers will receive continuing education units for attending.

Generous support for the Cincinnati Boychoir’s Outreach & Education program is provided by The Greater Cincinnati Foundation. The All-City Boychoir Festival has received in-kind donations from Graeter’s Ice Cream and Dewey’s Pizza.

The Cincinnati Boychoir was founded as the All-City Boychoir in 1965 under the auspices of the Cincinnati Public Schools; at that time, three boys from each Cincinnati Public School were invited to attend weekly rehearsals. Now in its 47th year, the Boychoir enrolls over 100 boys in citywide programs, and performs regularly with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati May Festival, and most recently with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. In March 2011 the Boychoir made their Kennedy Center Millennium Stage debut, and in December 2011 presented an all-male performance of Handel’s Messiah. All boys enrolled in the Boychoir will be participating in the World Choir Games in July 2012. The Cincinnati Boychoir is ensemble-in-residence at Christ Church Cathedral.

Lawrence, Scottish by birth, met Clara at the United Methodist Church of Ann Arbor, Michigan where he sang in the choir and she played the organ. The Maxwells resided in Cincinnati, where he worked at Graydon, Head & Richey. He was appointed Solicitor General of the United States by President Grover Cleveland in 1893 and resided in Washington during his term. He built Maxwelton at Edgecliff Drive, now a condominium, with the first full organ installed in a private residence. Upon his retirement to Cincinnati, he served as a law professor at Cincinnati Law School from 1896-1912, and later as president of the Cincinnati Musical Festival Association.

Lawrence married Clara Barry Darrow on December 27, 1876, with whom he raised two daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Graydon and Mrs. Jean Schmidlapp. He made his residence in Cincinnati, where he died on February 18, 1927, aged 73.

The scholarship is intended to pay tuition for those boys who have the skill and the desire to sing with the Boychoir but cannot afford it. The spirit of the gift is to bring more diverse boys to the choir from throughout the Greater Cincinnati area. Donations of any size can be made to the fund by contacting the Cincinnati Boychoir directly.

The scholarship was announced at a gathering at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Addison Clipson this past Sunday. The Tour Choir performed.

The 2011-2012 season of the Cincinnati Boychoir will focus on the Queen City and the wonderful tradition of choral music that continues here. In anticipation of the 2012 World Choir Games in Cincinnati, the Boychoir will present a season of collaborations with local organizations, including the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and Christ Church Cathedral, with music largely centered on the American singing tradition. In the months leading up to the World Choir Games, the Boychoir will take to the road to present their World Choir Games program to audiences throughout the city. Whether it is the beautiful Christ Church Cathedral downtown, or the iconic Music Hall looking over a newly renovated Washington Park, we hope to see you in one – or many – of our beautiful concert venues this year!

A long-time supporter and former board member of the Cincinnati Boychoir passed away last week. Trudy Eyrich was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a faithful friend and the consummate volunteer. For 22 years she taught Sunday School at St. James Episcopal Church. As part of the Volunteers in Public Schools program she tutored second graders at Vine Street School. Through the Cincinnati Woman’s Club she volunteered as an aide to the blind. She was for a time on the board of directors of Music Hall. She was a longtime district chairwoman for the Fine Arts Fund. As an enthusiastic and tireless volunteer at the Cincinnati Art Museum, Trudy was a president of its Women’s Committee, a gallery aide, a hostess at the information desk and an escort to those visitors who on the spur of the moment asked for help in seeing the museum. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid photographer.

When her grandson joined the Boychoir 25 years ago she became a passionate supporter of that group. The songs of the choir never failed to unleash her tears of pure elation. Trudy was fueled by her love of art and music. She introduced her children and grandchildren to her world of the arts and took great joy in their discovering its delights. The Boychoir’s recording of Jubilate Deo was the last recording she heard. As a testament of her commitment to musical excellence in Cincinnati, Trudy requested that donations be made in her name to the Cincinnati Boychoir.

In the words of former Boychoir Artistic Director Randall Wolfe, Trudy “did more for us than most by giving positive direction in some very poignant moments.”
